The I-Pace seats five, has a 234-mile range estimated by the EPA. The Jaguar I-Pace 2022 is a fully electric, small luxury SUV/crossover capable of traveling up to 234 miles between charges. Unimpressive Range The Bottom Line The Jaguar I-Pace offers great on-road performance, although its price is somewhat steep compared with competitors that have better battery range. While the Jaguar I-Pace 2022 fell short of its alleged driving range during our real-world tests, and was slow to recharge using the conventional outlets, the 2022 I-Pace demonstrates that electric vehicles can be electrifying in other ways.

Without any upgrades to Jaguars I-Pace drivetrain or performance, the i-Pace takes on competitors such as Teslas Model X and Y, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Audis E-Tron, promising to be the electric SUV that Jaguar calls an easy-to-live-with. While Jaguars I-Pace 400-hp, 240-mile all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain definitely screams SUV, its real-world body shape, interior room, and ride feel more sedan-like.

The I-Pace has omitted any active safety features, while its suite of driver-assistance features, InControl, offers the full complement of handy items such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, traffic signal recognition, and parking assistance, though you will not find any equivalent to Teslas highly touted full-self-driving suite here. Jaguar does not offer anything particularly groundbreaking in the Jaguar Driver Assistance Package. Plus, it offers one of the best free scheduled service periods we have seen. It is better by leaps and bounds over Jaguars previous I-Pace configuration, but its ability to schedule road trips for you automatically, based on charging needs, is not quite ready for prime time.

The range will be enough for most people, particularly if you are planning on using the Jaguar I-Pace for getting around town, but I do think that taking the car on a road trip requiring more than two full charges will be difficult, at least until the non-Tesla charging infrastructure that has over 100kW capacity becomes more widespread. For the sake of comparison, Teslas Model Y offers the longest range, 330 miles per charge. For comparison, the Audi e-tron has a claimed range up to 204 miles, while the Tesla Model X has up to 295 miles. A 162-mile range is more than twice as long as I-Paces charging capacity, and in a car starting at $65,990.

With one of 11kW home chargers, the I-Paces now able to recharge at a speed of 33 miles per hour, up from 22 miles per hour with a more-common 7kW wall box. The I-Pace also makes good use of the 11kW home chargers, which can be obtained only when you have three-phase power. Use the home charging (domestic) cable to charge I-PACEs easily at home.

A public charging cable and the growing number of public charging stations will allow you to charge your I-PACEs while you are out and about. The battery is also capable of accumulating incremental charges with the use of 110-volt charging cables (one comes standard with Jaguar I-Pace); in addition, the I-Pace has two levels of regenerative braking, which sends juice back into the battery as you drive.

On a road trip, according to Jaguar, the I-Pace will recharge with 100kW using CCS hardware so it will regain 63 EPA miles in 15 minutes, while the new higher-amperage onboard charger cut Level 2 (240V) charging time to under nine hours this year, down from around 13 hours before. Over-the-air software upgrade capabilities are enhanced, and engineers improved Jaguars I-Pace charging capability with the addition of a new 11-kilowatt onboard AC charger, allowing this Jaguar SUV to suck up 63 miles in 15 minutes while connected to a 100-kilowatt DC source. The 2022 I-Pace gets a new standard 11-kilowatt AC onboard charger to speed up the AC charging times (home or public AC charging stations); formerly, i-Pace owners had the option of a 7.3-kW capacity at 230 Volts, allowing SUVs to recharge from empty to 100% in 12.9 hours. The 2022 Jaguar I-Pace includes a standard DC quick-charging port, which allows for 80% battery recharge in just 40 minutes.

The Jaguar I-Pace is powered by a 90-kilowatt-hour battery pack, giving it a claimed 234 miles all-electric range; it has a small edge to the 2021 Audi E-Trons estimated 222 miles on the EPA scale. If Jaguars luxuries are not your thing, however, options such as the Kia EV6, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E offer better charging/electric tech, both in terms of range and charging speeds. If you are looking for an EV to use as your everyday driver around town, though, the I-Pace is still an entirely viable option.

The I-Pace signaled the beginning of something major when it was first introduced back in 2018 — that major manufacturers, not just Silicon Valley startups and BMW, were willing to properly invest in building new, first-from-the-ground-up EVs you could actually want to own, and could probably afford. The Jaguar I-Pace, ostensibly the most highly adorned production car (of any powertrain type) in modern history, received 62 international awards in its first year from automotive industry groups and media publishers in the areas of automotive design, handling/performance, technical innovation, powertrain design, environmental considerations, and passenger safety, with more than a dozen international Car/SUV of the Year selections including Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and ultimately the 2019 European Car of the Year, as well as the 2019 World Car of the Year (having also won Best Design and Best Green Car, an unprecedented treble). Ostensibly the most highly decorated production car (of any powertrain type) in modern history, the Jaguar I-Pace, in its first year received 62 international awards from automotive industry groups and media publishers in the areas of automotive design, handling/performance, technological innovation, powertrain design, environmental consideration, and passenger safety, with more than a dozen international Car/SUV of the Year selections including Germany, United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and ultimately 2019 European Car of the Year, as well as 2019 World Car of the Year Award (also capturing Best Design and Best Green Car, an unprecedented treble ). The inescapable nickname of Tesla Model X-killer continues to crop up.
