SSC is thrilled Dewetron has just confirmed their speed. Combined with the earlier 301mph lap, the entry-level top-speed two-way average, certified by Guinness, is 316mph, making it the fastest road-legal production car in the world. Not only is the One the first production car to achieve an official two-way speed of more than 300 mph, but also the first to pass the 500 km/h (311 mph) barrier.

SSC is still planning on trying to beat the 300-mph mark, which would stretch the record held by SSC, becoming the first production vehicle to achieve that or surpass the speed. According to The Drive, the SSC Tuatara was on a hauler trailer heading into Utah for its third attempt at a record. The Wash.-based SSC was sure that the fastest vehicle on earth could beat a production-car record, and was planning on making another attempt when catastrophe struck.

The Worlds Fastest Car SSC claimed the production car speed record in January, with an average speed of 282.9 miles per hour over two runs in opposite directions at Floridas Shuttle Landing Strip. There, on the same runway that was previously used for space shuttle landings, Dr. Larry Caplin took his SSC Thuatara Hypercar to the new production vehicle speed record, recording two runs in opposite directions at an average speed of 282.9 mph – the feat was formally announced by SSC North America SSC North America this morning.

Top Gear can reveal, exclusive, that Shelby SuperCars (SSC) North America has achieved a new top-speed record for a production vehicle, hitting the V-max at 331mph, while setting the average of 316.11mph over two passes along a closed road for a total distance of 7 miles outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. Well, on Saturday, 10th October, the team assembled along the seven-mile stretch of closed Highway 160 just outside Pahrump, Nevada, to try to — and establish — the new record, and pro driver Oliver Webb drove his hypercar, the Tuatara.

Well, on Saturday, October 10, a team gathered alongside a closed, seven-mile section of Highway 160 near Pahrump, Nevada to attempt — and set — a new record, with professional racer Oliver Webb driving its Tuatara hypercar Washington. According to SSC (pending independent verification) – it claimed the controversial production cars highest-ever top speed, recording 331.15 miles per hour (532.93 km/h) in a single direction, 316.11 miles per hour (508.73 km/h) in a single lap, and 508.73 miles per hour over an open stretch outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. On October 10, 2020, The SSC Tuatara – according to SSC (pending independent confirmation) – claimed a disputed production car top speed record, recording a one-way top speed of 331.15 mph (532.93 km/h) and a two-way average of 316.11 mph (508.73 km/h) on a seven-mile stretch of closed road outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, near Pahrump on State Route 160. The vehicle also claimed the record as the first production vehicle to cross the 500-kph barrier. Try refreshing your browser, or the video of the damage SSCs Tuatara sustained when it crashed into a freighter in the ship return. On Interstate 15 north of Salt Lake City, gusty winds picked up and sent the freighter tumbling over, damaging both the trailer and its enclosed $1.9 million hypercar.

British racer Oliver Webb turned the car around and did the exact same thing the other direction, this time without taking his foot off the accelerator until it reached 331.15 miles per hour (532.93 kilometers per hour), good for a 316.11-mph average over both directions, making the SSC Tuatara the fastest production vehicle on Earth. Another 50 minutes, 42 seconds later, Dr. Larry Caplin peaked at 286.1 mph heading south over the same stretch, both speeds higher than that of a Space Shuttle on landing.

After the contested first attempt at Pahrump, Nev., in which Dr. Larry Caplin did not ride, Dr. Caplin wanted to ensure his upcoming SSC Tuatara effort would match the passion in the automotive community about the project, although the final record of two-way speeds, as they are now known, actually happened in the course of a test, with the SSC team adjusting the vehicle to an attempted 300-mile-per-hour run — which was scheduled for some other day. After announcing the world record in January, Dr Larry Caplin and the SSC team planned to keep testing his SSC Tuatara to prepare to break the fabled 300-mph barrier – not to mention the fact Dr Caplin thought it would serve as a marquee attraction for CF Charitys supercar show. The first, northbound run recorded 279.7 miles per hour, and on the second, his hypercar, the Tuatara, reached 286.1 miles per hour over a distance of 1.9 miles, before the cars owners began decelerating. A second run at top speed was attempted on 12-13 December 2020, in Florida, but SSCs Tuatara failed to pass 252 mph (406 km/h) because of mechanical problems.

SSC said that given long enough roads, it would have been possible for The Ultimate Aero to reach speeds of up to 270 mph. The car in question is the 2007 model — since then, SSC has updated the Aero to incorporate a brand-new, twin-turbo V8 that makes 1287 horsepower, giving the car a theoretical top speed of 290 mph. I know that is a tough concept for folks to wrap their heads around, but the fact is, SSC has built a car that can hit that top speed. Then, last month, a video shared infinitely on YouTube, having first been posted to Vimeo by The Drive, purported to show its SSC Tuatara being pulled out of a wreckage of a caravan after flipping during strong winds in Utah – and the car itself looked quite shabby, too.
